|Grokking, and CAW
By Sheik Sebir
SF and Fantasy writers sometimes like to use the idea that Wizardlings spend years poring over tomes to learn the croaking and screeching of the old, dead, forgotten, but powerfully magickal language of the Elder Races/ Gods, etc, because one's common tongue doesn't have the power necessary to do effective Magick. the notion of special and unique Words of Power. that gives one access to Magick where there was none before, is constantly promoted in SF and Fantasy books, even by those who should know better. Mebbe Eskimo is really about terrible occult secrets and not alot of words describing snow. May Sedna bless you for trying though.
Learning Gaelic may be the key to unlocking the power necessary to do effective Magick. the notion of special and unique Words of Power that gives one access to Magick where there was none before, is constantly promoted in SF and Fantasy books, even by those who should know better. Mebbe Eskimo is really about terrible occult secrets and not alot of words describing snow. May Sedna bless you for trying though. Learning Gaelic may be the key to unlocking the Secrets of the Druids and the Sidhe !! Of course, you'll have to put up with the crazy spellings -- just to learn that its themes are mostly about rocks, fields, cliffs, drinking, fighting, nasty things to say about women, and insulting things to say about the Sassanach (English). They aren't called the Northern Irate and the Southern Irate for nothing. However, its also rumored that space aliens speak it fluently, so aat least ou be able to converse with them if you catch any, or vice versa... ERIN GO BRAGH !!
Grokking isn't all that hard to do - in fact, its fairly easy to pick up on, since its very similar ( if not identical to) Grounding and Centering, basic steps in magickal ritual construction. Sending out one's roots into Mother Earth (grounding) and bringing one's Attention to one's Center (centering). However, the "roots" are sent towards that which is being grokked. Since its also close to what Shamans do, it just takes time and practice. [[ Yes, this is the second Shamanism article. ]] One good book on Grokking the Shamanic Way is found in "Urban Shaman" by Serge Kahili King.
Here's where the Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit ( the five points of the Pentacle ) come in. Grokking the Essence of Fire doesn't mean hou have to touch it - just grokking its heat, and its spirit is enough, it seems almost alive, and hungry. grokking Earth is much like doing a Grounding. To grok crystals or rocks, seek to find its Pattern of energy. Acombination fo the two gave me a dream I still remember. A volcano entity laying in a pool of lava, deep underground can't be reasoned with. There's a sense of heat, great pressure, soon to be an eruption ... running through streets yelling... Mt St. Helens before its eruption ? I think it was.
Grokking is also about Change. Since you are what you grok; you can attempt to influence the grokkee's direction - or that it might attempt to influence Your direction ! This means that one shouldn't become so engrossed in concentration than you lose sight of what's going on, and one should keep some awareness of one's seperateness. Let's say there is a tidal wave than needs moving. You could try to stop it head on, but water isn't easily stopped head-on, it doesn't grok that way ! Its far easier to to work with the ways that water flows instead of improbabilities. ( most of you think it's impossible anyways, but please indulge me...)
Grokking Air includes clouds and storms, and the shapes they may bring to mind. Its rumored that a group of Huna once tried to push a Hurricane around. Its always a good practice to check first to see if our desires are appropriate. The Huna wanted it to go out to sea, but it kept on coming back towards land like a yoyo - until someone suggested that some folks just might need one in their back yards. Evidently, they found a deserving prospect for Uncle Sugar's Disaster Aid and let them .. er .. HAVE IT !!
